What? is...

A funk fusion sextet hailing out of the Hudson Valley of New York. Although commonly confused with the international sensation known as ‘The Who,’ What? has been pioneering their own path to success despite being put on second base by Russ Abbott in 1938.

The band found their roots in 2016 when Ryan Perrone and Dan Steen met while studying music at SUNY New Paltz. After graduating in 2020, the band solidified their current line-up and all moved in together.

Drawing inspiration from the rolling Catskill landscapes that once moved legends like The Band and Donald Fagen, What? merges funk, jazz fusion, and improvisational jam into a singular, uncontainable sound.

Each show is a new adventure, with rotating setlists and an anything-goes spirit that The New Paltz Oracle praised for its “spontaneity and staying boundless.”

Members of What? have shared the stage with Goose, members of Vulfpeck, The Wailers, Karl Denson, Proxima Parada, Toots & The Maytals, and more. They also moonlight as the horn section for reggae outfit The Big Takeover.

Their debut album Lavender Lounge dropped June 10, 2022, and their sophomore release is currently in the works.
